- The Pacific Island Peoples Course is about
the ancient and modern peoples who lived
in the great culture areas of Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia. This
is the first course in social science for many students. You can earn
three credits in the Social Sciences towards your college degree.
ANTH.135 transfers to most
U. of Hawaii campuses as a three credit elective course.
This course fulfills part of Honolulu Community College's
Social Science Core Requirements.
PLEASE NOTE:
ANTH.135 does NOT
earn H-Focus credit at the HCC campus or at UH Manoa
or other UH campuses.
In this course you will explore the cultures of some of the many
interesting peoples of the Pacific Islands and their prehistory,
history and current events including:
- Polynesian Islanders -
including the
peoples of Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, Aotearoa and Rapa Nui.
- Micronesian Islanders - including
the peoples of Moen, Pulap, Guam, and Bikini.
- Melanesian Islanders - including the
peoples of Fiji, Trobriands, New Guinea and New Caledonia.
- Religion and Magic in Pacific Island cultures.
- Art and Music in Pacific Island cultures.
- Politics and Economics in Pacific Island cultures.
- The Future of Pacific Island cultures - and all Humanity -
- (And what we can do about it!)
Check out the basic plan for the course:
- The Instructor is available most days via email, phone, fax
and in person on campus.
- Students get two well-written texts through the campus or
on-line bookstores.
- Some Lessons and Tasks or quizzes are also put on the web
using Laulima.
(Laulima is a learning environment used by many colleges and
universities.) - Students may use the Laulima Bulletin Board, Email
and Practice Quizzes,
to share information with classmates and the Instructor. -
The Instructor presents several web media lessons on Pacific Island
cultures where he has done fieldwork
- Students do research on islands or areas in Polynesia,
Micronesia and in Melanesia to write three reports.
- Three proctored tests are conducted on campus.
- Students may design extra credit projects to improve their
grade.
- Students may go on optional, extra credit treks to visit
prehistoric Hawaiian sites with the Instructor.
- Students may earn extra credit by visiting other Pacific
Island sites including:
Iolani Palace, Bishop Museum and the Polynesian Culture Center.
