The Occupational and Environmental Safety Management program at HCC provides training for students to function as paraprofessionals or technicians in the occupational and environmental safety and health field. The curriculum offers a broad background on safety and health program administration, workplace hazard recognition/evaluation/control, workers' compensation principles, hazardous chemical risk assessment, and environmental management. Students completing the program can earn a Certificate of Achievement or an Associate of Science degree.
Health and safety inspectors enforce and advise people on public health and safety regulations for work environment. They may work in environmental health and occupational safety and health. They must be able to work well with people, analyze and use facts, work with accuracy, have good eyesight, hearing and physical condition. The work can take place both indoors and outdoors. They often travel from one work site to another and work over 40 hours per week. Some inspectors may be required to climb, reach, or crawl, and the work environment may include noise, strong odors, extreme temperatures, and hazardous conditions.
Nationally the job outlook has a faster than average employment growth expectation for inspectors and compliance officers for the next few years while Hawai'i expects slower than average employment growth.
